| Yeah well since I am myself a debator at the DU level, and am quiet known now in the DU debating circle, I think that someone whould start a thread with this major activity of any campus. I have had the opportunity to meet with debators from Banglore, Kokatta and other cities (not Mumbai though). All Law colleges from the above cities take part in debating. So if anyone on this site is also a debator and/or is on their college debatiing society/team, then I would like to have an intellectual discussion with him | |

| well..well..well..now here's a topic that captured my attention right away..debating is one of my major passions..Im from Presidency college and spent the first two years of my college life participating in 3 or 4 debates every month..now iv been chained to my books..i participated in a couple of debates in senior high school and then went crazy in college..my city has an amazing debating atmosphere and my college is the one where the original Argumentative Indian once studied..so it's in my arteries i guess..we do not have a team as such in r college..we're all greedy pigs when it comes to debating(with me heading the pack)..and its a first come first serve policy..hehe..but there hasnt been any bloodshed so far..ive been left to cool my heels now n concentrate on my studies..so a virtual debate is jst what i'm looking for. oh and btw im not a 'him'..im a 'her'..if that's ok wit u then let the games begin! | |

| 1. Team Sizes
1.a. Each house shall have a debating team that shall consist of 3 people. There can also be researcher on a team, about 1-2 more people. However, only 3 debaters are required as each side must make 3 arguments for their position, and only three.
2. Structure of Debates
2.a. The Judge will open a debate thread which shall have the following structure to its title:
”Debate 1: Team A Vs Team B”
What can be ascertained from this title is that this debate is the first of the season between the two teams, and that Team A are providing the proposition, and Team B the opposition. The judge decides who argues what position by a coin toss. This post shall be set up one week in advance to provide each team enough time to communicate with their research team if they have one, or research for themselves on the topic and organize their arguments together.
2.b. Once the one week has passed and the debaters given enough time to get their arguments ready, each appointed team captain has 24 hours to post their team roster. For example:
Debaters:
Mary-Ann – First Argument
Joey – Second Argument
Ian – Third Argument
Reserve Debate bench:
Anthony
Roxanne
Kieran
2.c. The reserve bench may be called upon to post in the absence of a debater.
2.d. Once the 24 hours for the posting of rosters is over the Proposition team has 48 hours in which to post their first argument which shall be outlining their whole proposition along with a case structure. The opposition team has 48 hours from that post to post their own ifirst argument on the same lines. Therefore, the structure would look like so:
2.e. Judges opening post – 1 week until:
Proposition Team’s Roster – once posted, 48 hour time limit for:
Opposition Team’s Roster – once posted, 48 hour time limit for:
Proposition Team’s First Argument – once posted, 48 hour time limit for:
Opposition Team’s First Agrument – once posted, 48 hour time limit for:
Proposition Team’s Second Argument – once posted, 48 hour time limit for:
Opposition Team’s Second Agrument – once posted, 48 hour time limit for:
Proposition Team’s Third Argument – once posted, 48 hour time limit for:
Opposition Team’s Third Agrument – once posted, 48 hour time limit for:
Proposition Team’s Concluding Post – once posted, 48 hour time limit for:
Opposition Team’s Concluding Post
2.f. Once this is complete the thread shall be closed for the judge to do the scores and decide which team won the debate.
3. Word Limits.
3.a. To mimic the time limit restraints one would encounter were we to debate in reality, a maximum of 2000 words. For every 100 words over that limit the debater shall incur a 1 point penalty. There shall also be a minimum requirement of 500 words far a post to be quialified as an argument. For the conclusion, the maximum word limit is 1000, while the minimum is 250 words.
5. Judging and Scoring
5.a. The goal of the debater to someone else that your way of looking at something is the most correct. You will be judged on how effectively you do this.
5.b. Quotes
You may use quotes to illustrate your points. Using quotations is not necessary. It can be used when deemed necessary, however, don’t quote just for the sake of quoting. Make sure you explain what your quote means and how you interpret it and your point connects to the topic. Don’t leave any room for doubt. Do not over quote. One very well developed point with a relevant quote will earn you more points than 5 quotes haphazardly thrown into your argument.
5.c. Conciseness, relevance and effectiveness
Set your argument up in a logical order. Don’t jump around on your points; once you state something go on to support it before moving onto the next point. Make sure it all flows together, tell us what you believe and then prove it. Don’t jump around on your points; once you state something go on to support it before moving onto the next point. Reiteration is good, but do not constantly repeat what you have already said just to reach the word maximum. You can spend your time more efficiently elsewhere – developing another point, finding another rebuttal etc – so don’t waste your time. Do not waste time explaining something that is blaringly obvious and that everyone knows.
5.d. Rebuttals
Rebuttals are a required part of a debators argument. You MUST post rebuttals throughout the entire debate.
5.e. Factual errors shall be heavily penalized.
5.f. Main Arguments
Your main arguments will get you the most amount of points. Some tips to scoring highly:
- make your argument flow
- show depth in your analysis
- stick to the topic
- be confident in your arguing
- choose your quotes and how you analyze/comment strategically
- be innovative, think outside the box!
- watch your tone
5.g. Closing Statements
End strong. It needs to correspond with your opening statement as well as your main argument. Do not present any new ideas in your concluding post. You can score a total of 5 points here.
6. Point Deductions
7.a. Breaking the Word limit.
You shall be penalised 1 point per every 100 words you go over the limit of 2000 words. The amount that you go over shall be rounded up for the nearest 100. E.g. if you go over the limit by 101 words, you shall be penalised 2 points.
For going below minimum word limit, you shall be directly penalised 10 points, as this shows that you do not have enough arguments to support your point.
7.b. Late posts.
15 minutes late - 1 point
30 minutes late - 1.5. points
60 minutes late - 2 points
For every additional hour after that you shall lose 1 point. If you still haven't posted after 12 hours you shall automatically receive a deduction of 7.5 points for your argument.

| oh my god..what is this?the ten commandments for a debate?y can't we jst have somethn light like someone introducing a topic and then we take sides n give r opinions..and refute the points we disagree with..even something as 'unstructured' and 'disorganised' as this can give rise to a very intellectually stimulating discussion.. I can't really foresee any hands goin up for the judge's post..someone who'll have the patience to read thru all the posts and keep track of the word limit and give appropriate marks..n then there's always the issue of ppl not agreeing wit the judge's opinion..btw how does one conduct a virtual coin toss? ..this topic is goin nowhere..sheesh...let's just have a G.D... | |

| yup..then it wont be a virtual debate...as they have to be very organised, or people would just post one-liners and stupid stuff also. So in order to reduce such problems, we have rules :)
otherwise group discussions are being done in the Discussion Forum, things like SEZ's, ICL, etc... | |
