| THE IRONY OF LIFE I wish not to dispense with thee,For you are my bread and butter.I have grown weary of this loathsome act;But my very arms are tied by circumstance. For the reason that I kill you, is to live another day, to eat another meal!To satiate the pangs of “want” rooted from the vagaries of ill – fate and meager resource. For I am destined to kill the very source of my sustenance.I fear tomorrow, when thou shalt not be with me!I find myself in a deep dilemma, in dire straits, in quandary sans – pareil What shall I bequeath to my future generations, I know not. Irksome conscience, consumes my thought, lurking all the time. For what shall I utter in defence when I’m faced with the most telling question of my life, the most compelling question of the times? How would I ever justify the taking away of life?I know not!But I am tied by destiny, hammered by sin and bent by guilt. For in repentance, I shall languish in my own guilt, reconcile to my self – made fate and relinquish this agonizing burden. For my sardonic fate torments me!My mind is laden with the wrath of my vocation,My palm, moist from the sweat of murder; strangles my conscience.I wish nothing more, but to be resuscitated; To salvage some reason to “live”, again!--------Pronoy.This poem is about the predicament of a lumberjack. Their income depends on wood cutting/commercial felling and one finds it deeply ironical that they strike the very roots of their livelihood, quite literally. It depicts a lumberjack's sentiment for "the tree". | |
