| We were still buzzing with excitement, even when the cameras had left, and the mics were gone. Her phone kept ringing. And her parents were elated. She had been selected for Femina Miss India. We had all been following the reality series, just to catch a glimpse of our class mate sitting pretty with fake up on, and appealing the audience for votes. They would all be dressed up for the camera and working out their skinny bodies only to reduce to mere skeletons at the end of the day. Odd though for some one doing journalism, to be pursuing modeling, and that too so aggressively that she got selected for Femina Miss India. But not surprising she’s a pretty thing, tall and slender, yes that’s all you need to be. That’s it. You’ve made it you’re a beauty queen. You can be the “miss whatever”. But please don’t forget to promise your dedication towards world peace. Now since our beauty queens are so dedicated towards world peace, let’s see, when was the last time you heard “miss universe moderates talks between General Musharraf and Dr Manmohan Singh” or you read “Miss America holds negotiations with Osama”. It’s easy to get attracted by the fame and money and glamour. But quite different, to do something you are convinced is for a larger good. All contestants plead for votes, saying we must because it had been their childhood dream, and they want to do their parents proud…(sob, sob). When 1975 was announced international women’s day, many women’s colleges stopped having beauty contests, instead had personality contests. Female models today, are used in advertisements or in music videos, to add sex appeal. Well so much for personality! So the beauty queen came home without the crown, but with stories, gossip, a fan following. And every thing a star struck girl would only dream of. But what the hell!! I’ll just sit with guy friends, watch the babes and wonder if I am being an inverted snob!! | |
