| hey all .... campus correspondents and the tang team.... We are indeed progressing... see the country is all set to have its first virtual campus.... and the best part... very soon, we will also be celebrating our 60th year of Independence ..... I hope all of us would celebrate this in a slightly different manner this year.... we will all witness a "virtual celebration" on Campus18 i suppose we are around 60 people at campus 18 as of now... so ideally we should have 60 different answers,,,,.... answers to this..... so what does it really mean to u.... what does Independence really mean to U??????? | |

| I think the concept of celebrating "Independence Day" is highly over-rated in our country. For our generation and our immediate next one's, it is only about wishing "Happy Independence Day.. yay!" and hosting a flag in schools. For others, it is sitting at home at watching the parade at India gate.. Nothing wrong with that, but most people don't even realise the meaning of liberation and importance or freedom, and that's sad. I don't know what should we do about this.. but for now I can say that there is enough influence from the west to make our people feel inferior, enough corruption, dishonesty and problems to stop our progress. The word "Progress" itself is highly mis-interpreted... meh.. I don't think we are independent really.. | |

| Dependence up on in-dependence is our only independence. | |

| You'd take much care in sustaining the integrity of your independence; more so considering no independence is easily sought. So you breathe easy on your status of depending on the in-dependence on any one. Hence independent. | |

| I often feel a line loses it's essence at moments it is tried an explanation over. Like I felt here. But let's not talk this here. It'll break the thread. Nice anyway. | |

| we need realise the difference between independence and freedom....are these 2 the same things? i think not....
in the truest sense i do not think any nation today is independent....are we not dependent on various nations for oil or food or other commodities? in turn they are dependent on us.....we can say we are independent only if we could cut off all trade ties and yet manage 2 sustain ourselves as a nation....mind u in this sense dependence need not indicate weakness....india is dependent upon the USA for its nuclear progam now but the USA is dependent on India for support in case there is a confrontation with China....this is just an example....are we an independent nation? no we are not....there are none....
next we come to the question of freedom....are we a free nation? i do not think there is anything known as absolute freedom....freedom is relative....freedom from what? we may be free from colonial control now....in that sense we are free....but as pragya pointed out are we free from poverty? are we free from terrorism and all its forms? are we free from discrimination?
my point being....no we are not an independent nation...not in this modern globalised world....as for free....we are free from a number of things but are not free from an equal (if not more) number of things | |

| I feel that in today's time....people do not realise the importance of staying an independent country, the freedom to work,to education,to vote and choose a leader,to watch a movie at a multiplex whenever we want,to be able to do anything for that matter. We've forgotten that all of this was made possible with the sacrifices of a million people and treat independence day like any other holiday . I fell that it should be celebrated larger than life. All we do is watch the parade till noon and then continue with our routine as though nothing great ever happened.Had it been Diwali though,we would have blasted crackers right from morning and celebrations would have ended only late in the night. On independence day,we should pay respect to the many brave people who laid down their lives for us in struggle and then dwell on the fact that we are truly lucky to be born in an independent country, and such a wonderful one at that. If its not us who'll respect our culture and heritage, then who will? So instead of saying 'HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY' this year, try saying 'JAI HIND'. | |
