Just a few days ago I was flipping through a magazine and I came across this section, which told you how many days of your life you lost because of things like lack of exercising, hypertension, obesity, etc. One of those things was smoking.

When I was in class I, we had a P.T teacher we called Solomon Sir. He was kinda weird. He told us things, which, if I told you now, you would wonder why anybody needed to know at all. Like how to play “Simon Says”. Okay, that’s not so weird, but first of all, hello? P.T teacher and Simon Says don’t go too well together. And secondly, the game freaked me out completely after I saw a creepy psycho movie with something like that in it. Anyway. Another weird one was (this is seriously weird) how to use a handkerchief when you have a cold. scratch

So among the many weirdnesses, one day he told us that for every cigarette you smoke, you give up five minutes of your life. That got me thinking. Five minutes. That means 12 cigarettes would take an hour. And 288 cigarettes would take a day. And so on. I forgot about it in a few years, but thankfully the bright idea of ever even trying to smoke still never struck me.

But what I read in the magazine, and what I thought after it, I hope to remember for the rest of my life. There wasn’t much written there. It was just a single sentence. Not much information, not much of an attempt by the editor to nudge a smoker into quitting the habit. But to me it still said so much. It said that the habit of smoking takes eight years off your life. In other words, it cuts short your life by eight years.

If you’ve ever even so much as considered smoking, please just imagine this. It’s simple, but painful. Suppose you’re on your deathbed. You’ve not got much time left. Any moment could be your last. You’re thinking of all that you wished you could’ve done in life- things that you couldn’t do, jobs that you couldn’t wind up because you became incapable. And then someone tells you that you had the choice of living another 8 years, but you refused. You didn’t take that option. Just to look cool.

well, i think here's another occassion where generalization is at full swing. How can you say that someone who smokes does it just to look cool? there are a lot of youngsters out there who take to smoking not because they look cool, but because it gives them satisfaction of some sort (i don't smoke, so can't really say what sort of satisfaction). There may be thousands of other reasons as to why someone would take to smoking...could be frustration, or mental sickness, or unemployment, or family problems,etc etc...the list is endless. yes, a lot of teenagers these days opt for smoking just because they think it makes them look cool, but that doesn't necessarily imply that everyone does that to look cool.

my only personal encounter with the fag has been the song sutta by zeists...so evn i dnt know wht feeling it gives...
yeahh..
looking cool is one big reason...bt a lot of my friends smoke cz of the building mental stress...it helps thm unwind...or so do they think.....

@ankit...well i have had very close encounters with cigarette and drug addicts, and it's not always that they are at fault! sometimes the circumstances pull them into it...cause not everyone in this world is as strong as we think! and i agre...this unwinding thing is the hippest word these days!!

@radhika...nice dp...and you are welcome! i think we should try and find out what exactly is going inside the mind of a smoker....though it's really tough!

i think instead of just weirdly reacting (or not reacting) to smoking...we should try and solve the problem!

i said 'we should try and solve' ...if i had a solution in mind, i would have put that to action! and as far as the pan wallah not knowing wether u 18 or not, more than it being his fault, it is ur fault if u asking for cigarette wen you aren't 18...(though i don't understand that what's with 18? do you not get harmed if you smoke after u turn 18???)...i think it's more of an awareness issue!

I agree with you about people having issues like frustration, coping up, exhaustion and all, but its just that most of the smokers that I know did start only because they thought it looked cool, so please excuse me for that.
And also, I think all of us have some issue or the other in life to deal with - we all have our own problems that everyone may not know about, but if some of us can find better ways of dealing with them than smoking, then why not others... why choose THAT as your stress buster in the first place?!

again...circumstances sweetheart...someone might not find any other stress buster...for me music is wat relaxes me or may be dance...for others who don't have access to music or don't know dancing, smoking might be the way out!!!! and people we know is just a meagre fraction of people who smoke...and lots of older people who aren't really concerned with lukin cool smoke too...so u see, it's a problem of the masses and not just the youth!!

and choice again is a personal issue....you can't disapprove of someone just because he made a choice you dont like....

well as far as radhika says its cool i dnt think soo..well wanna ask u one question/???have u been 2 D SKOOL...there hell lotta guys and even gals...nthn 2 be shocked abt r found smoking....may be [m not sure]...sm of them fag cz they wanna look cool but jitna i think most of them fag because it serves as a stresss buster 2 them...in my coll i hav a friend who wants 2 fag because she thnks its kool....soo it really depends from person to person...
