A Thousand Splendid Suns
I recently read this book by Khaled Hosseini. He is the same author who wrote
Kite Runner.
Both the books have been outstanding and has given a totally new
experience to me. I thougth of writing a review of the book but i
thougth that in doing so i migth reveal the story. I know revealing the
story could kill the interest of any person and i would never want that
to happen. So basically i am using this as my medium to praise the
author and his brilliant piece of work.
A Thousand Splendid Suns much like
Kite Runner is based
on Afghanistan and even the time frame is very much same. It potrays
the rich times of Afghanistan and also thier diversified culture. I was
possible to draw many similarities between then Aghanistan and our own
country India. Both the countires have such a diversified population
and each group contributing so much to the cultural heritage.
I never knew that Kabul was such a such a big cultural city. Also
reading about the description about the Buddha statue in the Bahamiyan
(which was later abolished by the talibans) or the the description of
the hills or the internal beauty made me wondered what all i have
missed! How i wish we still had the Kabul that Hosseini has described.
Also this books tells us the stroy of the fall of Afghanistan which,
believe me, people will awestruck you. Rigth from that dynasty ( i dont
remember the kings name) to the russians or talibans and then the
americans to finish it off. All these people with their lame excuses of
liberty were finishing the country and with each blow the people of country were losing everything.
Now to the author Mr Khalid Hosseini. The writer has a typical style of
writing which is very evident if you read both the books. But still i
am very sure you would love the style. And I find him an acutely clever
writer knowing the basics of story telling. Mr Hosseini clearly shows
to his peers that you need not be complex and rather have a simple
story telling style. The basics can still perfrom miracles that layered
work can never. He is very much successful in putting up the rigth
image of his country and i m very sure that both the books could be his
tribute to the sad demise of their culture. It is very evident from his
books that he loves his country and wants people around the world to
know about their culture. I guess many writers from different countries
should inspire from his work and give us more books about their nation.
I would love to read books from indian authors giving a great account
of our nation.
Also i would like to specially mention about the lead protagonist of
his book. The author has threaded the character in such a beautiful
way. I feel when you read a book,
you live the book. The
characters pop up into your living room. And you will be amazed to see
this character grow throughout the book. It will be like it is there in
front of you and you wont realise and then suddenly you will see and
wonder how did this this thing happened. This character should be a
lesson to all the aspiring writers.
Also i would like to tell others that
Kite Runner was more emotionally attached to me than this one as it was a story of two boys. I was able to relate to their mind. So
Thousand Splendid Suns could do the same for girls. But all of you....Do read it!!
