Creativity has a spirit that transcends death, and creation's
flames remain inextinguishable even as the creator expires. "Alo jalao
hridaydwipe" held in St.Xavier's college auditorium on 8th August
seemed to convey exactly the same message as it commemorated the death
anniversary of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

Organized
by the Bengali literary society of St.Xavier's college, it is a day
that is annually observed to pay due homage to the poet and literary
genius whose prolific creations and philosophies have taught the world
to think anew.

The
guests for the event included minister Abdus Sattar, the pro
vice-chancellor of Calcutta university Dr. Suranjan Das and artiste
Kharaj Mukhopadhyay. The principal of the college Father PC Mathews
spoke on the significance of the day and welcomed the guests after the
mood of the program was set by melodious songs sung by college students
Meghodeepa and Anusmita.

The chief guests who elaborated on the importance of "Baishe
Srabon" were all in praise for the college and its students. Dr.
Suranjan Das mentioned about his special association with the college
and remarked "autonomous or not St. Xavier's remains a prestigious
institution and pride of the Calcutta University". He also emphasised
on the importance of adhering to Tagore's philosophies with
regards to life and education system even beyond these annual events-
in our everyday life.
The dance recital "Bashiwala" directed by
teacher Sujata Lahiri, that followed, was an unique presentation. The
group of dancers and the musicians gave a well synchronized and
charming performance coordinated with college student Rajanya's
recitation.

Kharaj Mukhopadhyay, who is also an ex-student of Xavier's,
took the stage after a small break for refreshments. Kharaj specialises
in folk but for the event he sang choice Rabindra Sangeet interspersed
with interesting anecdotes. Opening with "Aloker ei jharna dhara"
Kharaj went on to sing some of the most popular songs from Tagore
including songs like "amar o poran o jaha chai...". While reminiscing a
childhood anecdote he recited of the poem "Pujar Saaj".

The
students of the college were closely involved with the event as
performers as well as volunteers. The involvement of the professors to
guide the students helped in smooth and successful functioning of the
show that saw quite a good turn out despite the conveyance problems
because of the unauthorized sector's strike.
The program successfully payed yet another tribute to the
legendary Bengali who continues to kindle lives and live in the heart
of people even after 66 years of his demise.
